Bobby Segall, a distinguished lawyer from Montgomery, graduated first in his class at the University of Alabama Law School, clerked for Judge Frank M. Johnson, Jr., and later earned an LLM from Harvard Law School. With a practice focused on litigation and constitutional law, he has represented numerous public officials and has been recognized as a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, among other accolades, while also serving in various leadership roles within legal organizations.
Bobby Segall grew up in Montgomery, graduating from Sidney Lanier High School. He attended college at Vanderbilt University, and law school at the University of Alabama, where he finished first in his graduating class. One of Bobby's great heroes growing up was Judge Frank M. Johnson, Jr., who was noted for his courageous civil rights decisions during turbulent times in Alabama. One of the foremost highlights in Bobby's career was clerking for a year with Judge Johnson. That year produced a lifetime of memories and a lasting relationship with the judge.
Following his clerkship, Bobby attended Harvard Law School, where he received an LLM degree in 1973 and met his wife, Sandy. At the end of that year, Bobby joined Copeland Franco (then called Hobbs Copeland). Bobby's practice is comprised almost entirely of business litigation. He has handled a wide array of cases for both plaintiffs and defendants. Bobby's practice has also included many and varied United States and Alabama constitutional law cases, cases before the Alabama Ethics Commission, cases before the Judicial Inquiry Commission, and cases involving voting and election law. Over the course of his practice, Bobby has represented numerous public officials, including a governor, lieutenant governors, attorneys general, secretaries of state, and several legislators. He has also represented Alabama's Democratic Party. Bobby is admitted to practice before all state and federal courts in Alabama, the United States 11th Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States Supreme Court.
Bobby's litigation skills have been recognized through his selection as a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, and as a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates. He has been included in the publication “Best Lawyers in America” for more than 35 years, and he has been named an Alabama Super Lawyer, having been listed among Alabama's top ten lawyers for the year 2008 and for several years, among Alabama’s Top Fifty Lawyers. Bobby’s appellate litigation skills have been recognized through his selection as a Fellow of the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers.
In addition to his busy law practice, Bobby has served as president of the Montgomery County Trial Lawyers Association and the Montgomery County Bar Association from whom in 2021, he received the MCBA Service and Achievement Award. He has also served as president of the Hugh Maddox Chapter of the American Inns of Court and as president of the board of the Federal Defender's program for the United States Middle District of Alabama. On the state level, Bobby served as a bar commissioner for nine years, and in 2005-2006 served as president of the Alabama State Bar. He also served as president of Legal Services Corporation Alabama for six years. Bobby served on the Chief Justice's Commission on Professionalism, and as Secretary of Alabama's Commission on Access to Justice. Bobby is a Life Fellow of the American Bar Foundation and of the Alabama Law Foundation.
